Process Cooking – Exploring, Learning, and Creating in the Nursery

At our nursery, we want children to enjoy hands-on learning experiences that build creativity, independence, and essential life skills. Process Cooking is a playful, practical activity that allows children to explore food, textures, smells, and tastes while learning through doing. It is not about producing a perfect product, but about the experience and process of cooking.

What is Process Cooking?

Process Cooking is an early years programme designed for children aged 2–5 years. It focuses on the process of cooking rather than the final product, allowing children to explore, experiment, and learn independently.

Key aspects of Process Cooking include:

  • Exploration and Creativity – Children experiment with ingredients, mix textures, and try new foods.
  • Simple Picture Recipes – Age-appropriate visual guides, such as making a sandwich, fruit salad, or snack, help children follow steps independently and build confidence.
  • Independence and Choice – Children make decisions about ingredients, order of steps, and presentation.
  • Sensory Learning – Children explore smells, textures, tastes, and even sounds, which develops sensory awareness.
  • Problem-Solving – Children learn how to adapt and try again if things don’t go as planned.

For example, a picture recipe for a sandwich might show:

  1. Choosing the bread
  2. Spreading butter or spread
  3. Adding fillings (cheese, cucumber, ham, or fruit)
  4. Cutting into shapes
  5. Serving or tasting

This approach allows children to practice following instructions, sequencing steps, and developing confidence in the kitchen, while keeping it fun, safe, and exploratory.

Unlike traditional cooking lessons, Process Cooking is child-led, meaning there is no expectation of perfection. Children learn through doing and experiencing, gaining practical life skills alongside maths, literacy, and social development.

How Process Cooking Supports Learning

Process Cooking promotes a wide range of skills that are essential for early development:

Physical Development

  • Strengthens fine motor skills through stirring, pouring, kneading, spreading, and chopping soft foods
  • Develops hand-eye coordination

Mathematical Skills

  • Counting, measuring, and comparing quantities
  • Exploring shapes, sizes, and patterns

Language and Communication

  • Discussing ingredients, steps, and outcomes
  • Following picture-based recipes
  • Expanding vocabulary related to food and cooking

Social and Emotional Development

  • Working collaboratively with peers
  • Sharing tools and ingredients
  • Taking turns and managing small risks

Creativity and Problem-Solving

  • Making choices about ingredients and steps
  • Expressing ideas through food combinations and presentation

How the Programme Works

Children take part in small group sessions with trained practitioners guiding and supporting them:

  • Groups of 4–6 children to ensure safety and support
  • Sessions take place 2–3 times per week depending on the age group
  • Each session lasts 20–30 minutes
  • Activities include mixing, shaping, kneading, spreading, chopping soft foods, decorating, and tasting
  • Picture recipes or visual instructions are provided to help children follow steps independently

All sessions are safe, supervised, and age-appropriate, with a focus on exploration and enjoyment.

Our Specially Trained Staff

Process Cooking activities are led by practitioners who have received specialist training in early years cooking, food safety, and child development:

  • Tahereh – Nursery Practitioner (3–4 Room)
  • Carmen – Nursery Practitioner (2–3 Room)

Tahereh and Carmen work together across the nursery to plan, supervise, and reflect on each session, ensuring activities are developmentally appropriate, engaging, and inclusive. Their teamwork ensures children in all rooms benefit from high-quality Process Cooking experiences.

Parent Involvement

We encourage parents to participate and support children’s learning at home by:

  • Discussing cooking activities and ingredients with your child
  • Trying simple, safe cooking or sensory food activities at home
  • Encouraging your child to follow picture recipes or instructions
  • Talking about what they see, smell, and taste, and sharing favourite family recipes

These activities reinforce skills learned in nursery and help children see cooking as fun, exploratory, and part of everyday life.

Benefits for Children

Through Process Cooking, children develop:

Confidence in trying new foods and textures
Independence and responsibility
Early maths and language skills
Social and emotional skills through teamwork
Creativity and problem-solving abilities

Research in early years education shows that practical, hands-on activities like Process Cooking improve engagement, learning outcomes, and school readiness.
